Everyone at Allegheny Valley School understands that choosing a residence for a loved one can be a very difficult decision.  We want to make this transition as smooth as possible for both the individual and his or her family.  We spend time with families to build close, life-long relationships so that we can become a second family for the individual.

Our reputation as a comfortable and stable environment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities begins with our superior staff who offer the support needed to help our residents achieve their goals.  Residents learn to become more independent through activities, daily chores and, for some, jobs where they earn a paycheck.

Our individuals live in homes or at campuses that allow them to experience a warm atmosphere similar to the one they would experience at home.  They help with cooking meals and cleaning.  They also have the freedom to personalize their living space.  Residents attend program centers during the day where learn skills and work toward achieving personal goals.

Individuals at Allegheny Valley School also participate in many extracurricular activities including going on trips to local sporting and cultural events, hosting parades and carnivals, picnicing in local parks and participating in Special Olympics, to name a few.  We also honor our individuals with holiday and birthday celebrations.

At Allegheny Valley School, we treat each individual with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Admissions Process
When a family expresses an interest in Allegheny Valley School, we send out an application for an admissions packet and ask for referrals.  A primary diagnosis of mental retardation is required for admission.  The full application including medical, educational and behavioral records, a physical evaluation and the most recent IEP, IPP or ISP will be reviewed by a committee.  If we feel one of our facilities would be appropriate for the individual, the family will be invited for a tour and interview with the Admissions Chairperson.  After that meeting, it will be determined if the individual should be placed on the waiting list for one of our facilities.

Allegheny Valley School does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, disability, color, religious creed, ancestry or national origin.

Family Involvement
Allegheny Valley School encourages family involvement.  Families are invited to be a part of their loved ones goal planning and team meetings.  AVS also has a Parents Association which meets regularly and participates in activities.
