What makes Allegheny Valley School different from other facilities?
Allegheny Valley School is known best for its outstanding reputation. We maintain a low profile in the media, but keep excellent relationships with the county and other agencies. Our case workers spend time with families to make their transition as easy as possible; throughout this transition, we do not take the place of the primary family, but instead become a second family. All of our facilities are very well kept. Most of our residents are referred by families of our current residents. Our facilities include community group homes, campuses and program centers. All are safe and very well maintained.

What is your staff/individual ratio?
This depends on the needs of the individuals. In most cases the ratio is one staff member to four individuals.

How much training does your staff go through?
Before working with the individuals, our new employees go through a two-week training and orientation program. They are taught how to work with our residents and give them the support they need. In addition, all staff must attend 24 hours of additional training each year.

How can families get involved at AVS?
Allegheny Valley School encourages family involvement. Families are invited to be a part of their loved ones goal planning and team meetings. AVS also has a Parents Association which meets regularly and participates in AVS activities. The Parents Association helps with holiday parties, newsletter mailings and fund raisers.

What is your turnover rate?
AVS has a great reputation for their stability of management and administrative staff. Our house managers are also very dedicated to making our residents lives as fulfilling as possible and make every staff transition as smooth as possible. On average, our house managers stay between three and five years, however we do have some house managers who have more than 20 years of service to AVS.
